The Power of Your Own Motivational Thoughts: How to Get Yourself Moving

Writer: Dane BoyleDane Boyle

Ever feel like no amount of motivational quotes or positive thinking can get you moving? That’s because motivation isn’t one-size-fits-all. What fires you up might not work for someone else, and that’s okay. The key is learning how to create your own motivational thoughts—ones that truly drive you to take action.

Why Motivational Thoughts Matter

Motivational thoughts aren’t just about feeling good. They help you take action. It’s not about repeating positive affirmations that don’t resonate—it’s about finding what uniquely drives you and using that to push yourself forward.

Albert Einstein once said, “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” But how can you turn a difficult moment into an opportunity? By creating a thought process that fuels you into action.

Making Motivation Personal

To truly harness motivation, you need to experiment. Play around with different thoughts and find the ones that get you moving. For example:

  • If you’re facing a tough situation, imagine yourself in the future telling someone how you turned things around.

  • Visualize yourself being interviewed about overcoming your current challenge—what would you say?

  • If proving people wrong excites you, think about someone doubting you and how you’ll prove them wrong.

  • If avoiding failure pushes you, think about the consequences of inaction and use that as fuel.

Motivation isn’t about forcing positivity—it’s about discovering what truly makes you tick.

Learn Your Own Triggers

Experiment with what works best for you:

  • Do visual thoughts inspire you? Picture yourself achieving your goal.

  • Do verbal thoughts work better? Explain your goals to someone else to build excitement.

  • Do you thrive on competition? Challenge yourself with deadlines or friendly rivalries.

  • Do rewards motivate you? Promise yourself something meaningful for completing a difficult task.

For example, I’ve found that talking about my ideas out loud gets me excited. If I’m struggling to write, I explain my thoughts to someone else—by the time I’m done, I’m eager to put pen to paper.

Make Motivation Work for You

Some tasks just aren’t inspiring, but they still need to get done. When this happens, create a reward system to keep yourself motivated. Whether it’s a trip to the beach, a relaxing evening, or even a simple bowl of ice cream—find what makes the effort feel worth it.
